Moral policing gone wacko.

Mei | Thoughts | Sunday, October 29th, 2006

When a young Chinese couple was charged with “indecent behaviour” nearly three years ago, I felt and thought that there shouldn’t be the need to establish a team for the sole purpose of policing morals. Now, my thoughts are reinforced more than ever. Why?

For one fact alone: people are not perfect and thus, are not in the position to judge how morally upright a person is. Besides, why concentrate on removing the speck of dust in my neighbour’s eye when I have a log in my own eye?

If indecent behaviour is kissing in public and the like AND thus needs to be policed by authorities, then what about the following actions:

  • Unethical conduct of men in authority who verbally harass female suspects, eg talking about how they can see the suspect’s erect nipples, how revealing the outfit is and what it does to people, etc.
  • Ministers going around telling the world that their children should learn how to be better cheats from them (their parents)
  • Councilmen breaking the law and excusing it to “everyone is doing it, why can’t I?”
  • Men in authority having the cheek to go through sexually explicit material FIRST before others on the grounds of “censorship” (just admit that you want to get your jollies off)
  • Religious male officers raiding non-Muslim homes/hotel rooms on the pretext of arresting someone for khalwat (close proximity) when it really gives them the kick to see women half-naked (Now, how come we don’t have religious FEMALE officers doing these raids too?)
  • Bribery and corruption. Need I say anymore?
  • Fathers, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, etc, getting away with rape, abuse and incest.
  • So forth. (You only have to read the papers for examples.)

Society, the idea(s) of acceptable behaviour and conduct, and culture are constantly changing. How can we expect morals to be the same as they were, say, 10 years ago when miniskirts, boots and rock & roll were the equivalent of low-cut tops, bikinis and heavy metal today? How can we teach children about proper and inappropriate behaviour when the very people whom we look up to as role models (police offers, ministers, councilmen and leaders) are guilty of less-than-morally upright behaviour? How can we expect to tell others how to live when our own lives and houses are riddle with dirty, skeletons and rubbish? How can we expect to shout out our people’s faults when our coats are covered in mud?

Do not talk to me about the need to enforce good behaviour and the like for the sake of religion and social harmony/structure. Adults have to have been children at some point in their lives. Educate your people about good parenting. Educate your people to adopt good and ethical values. THEN entrust them to God and LET GO. Have faith in the fact that you have done your best and that if ever these people were to falter in their walk, it is their own doing and thus their problem. They will have to take it up with God, not you.

Take care of yourself and your house first before you go around telling others how to behave and how to live.

Frankly, this JAIS thing disgusts me. Buggers who go around abusing their power, scaring elderly couples, allegedly demanding sex from suspects and etc telling people what is moral and ethical conduct. Really, sometimes I think these people are D.U.M.B and we are even dumber for allowing these things to happen.

  1. Good post here Mei. Some of the incidents are just plain ridiculous on the part of the authority. There are more important things in the country to worry about other than moral upright. Disappointed with the ongoing ciriticisms about all the wrong things at the wrong time. Didn’t help with the media trying to sensationalise the wrong things.

[No wonder the country is the way it is today. Disappointed is one thing. Disgusted is another. =.= ]
